font-Journal
It's
impossible to find decent fonts on the web without having to put
up with vicious popup advertising and extremely annoying banner
ads you say? Enter the font-Journal. A private project by a professional

Still under development.
Fontcraft's
Scriptorium Fonts and Graphic Arts
Many
designers are now supporting the FREE web fonts offered by Fontcraft.
These are clean, easy to read, good looking fonts. You will probably
want to install them if you surf the web. You will probably need
them if you want to design attractive web sites because of the limited
supply of installed cross platform fonts which display well on the
screen (most fonts are designed for printing).

Web site design covers many different technologies. Northern

Web Site Search Engine Optimization Resources
The
most important part of a web page is it's content. But making a
page which is also spider friendly is crucial. If you are going
to take the design or promotion duties on yourself, at least arm
yourself with the knowledge you need to do it right. Unless you
are a large well known organization such as Pizza Hut or Walmart,
this step is critical to the success of your company. A word of
warning, this is not an exacting science. Search engines change
their rules often and guard their artificial intelligence system
of ranking. And these rules change quickly.
Search
Engine Watch - How to use HTML Meta Tags
I personally
think that anyone who designs a page should know and understand
HTML. But simply meeting specifications is not enough. Understanding
how to use Titles, Meta Tags, keywords and content will be more
important than knowing the code. This site explains the important
tags and gives you the meat of what you need to know.
10
Questions About Meta Data
CNET Builder.com
has a great comprehensive intro on how to use meta tags.
Back
to Basics: META Tags
This is a great
meta tag tutorial from WebDeveloper.com by Scott Clark about many
useful meta tags including the Dublin Core, which although isn't
used by the search engines currently, could be at any time.
META

The information
you need. Covers
generator, author, keywords, description, refresh and expires. These
are they key tags.
A
Dictionary of HTML META Tags
If you want to
go beyond the necessary and know everything about meta tags, this
article will give you everything about every standard meta tag available.
And you only need the standard metas.

Learning HTML
If
you're not going to go with us, or a true pro, you are going to
need to know it all. So why have I put SEO and Meta Tag information
in front of HTML? Because they are the most important part, the
very reason that you need to learn HTML is the same reason that
you have to learn how to do it right.

HTML Style Guides, Tips & Tricks
If
you are the do-it-yourself type, there is no reason you can't. But
no matter who's WYSIWYG editor you wind up with, if you don't know
HTML you won't be able to fix simple problems. The simplest of problems
can wind up quite damaging in the long run.

Overture
- Style Guidelines
The
very first thing a good designer does is fabricate your titles and
keywords for each page. Although I have problems with pay for listing
services (they cannot represent the major portion of the web, free
information from homepages and organizations), Overture has provided
an excellent style guide to assure clientele can design their meta
tags properly before submitting sites. These rules do apply to more
engines than just their own.

HTML Directory
This
is a nice little
directory of useful and helpful information, pointers to free fonts,
clip art and other good stuff, but I was surprised how many great
HTML help files, tips and tricks he had available there. The design
is simple and straight forward, easy to navigate. If a blinking
banner pops up, reload the page, problem solved. This one is worth
the trip. In fact, I found an answer to one of the questions that
I was trying to get answered on a particular topic that the pro
sites had no information on. Thank God my quest is over. Very good
links to hard to find info here.

Web Promotion Resources
www.apromotionguide.com
You
must be asking why this section came up now. Well, in order to promote
your web site correctly, you have to design it with search engine
optimization in mind. If you don't, you will almost undoubtedly
wind up redesigning much or most of each and every page. So look
into what you need to know first, now that you know what Meta Tags
are and how to work with HTML effectively.
Search
Engine Tutorial for Web Designers
Now
that you understand the key basics, you have to understand how titles,
meta tags and keywords are used in order to know how to take advantage
of them. If you don't, you may well fall so far down in the listings
that you will never get noticed and have to rely on expensive ad
campaigns. Northern Webs are experts in this area.
J.K.
Bowman's Spider Food - Search Engine Optimization and Web Site Promotion
This is an important asset for the web design and development community.
Handles this subject on all fronts and is a great teaching tool.
Meta
Medic
Once
you are ready to submit your pages, make sure that they will pass
inspection. Northern Webs provides the oldest tool in existence
for this, which they have refined over the years, Meta Medic. However,
this should be your very last stop. Your content should be ready,
your copy checked, and all of your links, both internal and external,
need to be verified. Your web site needs to be complete, without
any signs that it is under construction. And yet all good sites
are constantly under construction, constantly evolving. Not redesigning,
but updating and staying current, adding new features. Just don't
make it common knowledge that there's more work to do, especially
to the search engines.
Website
Promotion Myths - Debunked
This
is the best article I have read on web site promotion. Again, Northern
Webs steps into the lime light with this one. It covers almost all
forms of web site promotion other than search engine and directory
optimization in plain and simple easy to understand English. They
cover directory listings and search engine optimization in a separate
tutorial (previously mentioned). A must read!
Overture
- Advertiser's Guide to Listing with Overture
This
should be required reading for anyone wanting to boost their search
engine ranking. Relevancy is key to understanding how search engines
rank web sites. Overture's explanation of this term is excellent.
Though Overture uses different methods of ranking than many search
engines, relevancy still applies to almost all of the big guns no
matter whether they index meta tags or not.
Web Design Techniques, etc.
As
I have stated previously, content is key. Even if you used the search
engines to get a number one listing on all of them, if users simply
hit the back button because they didn't find anything, didn't find
what they expected, or simply thought the presentation sucks, your
number one listing will become a very low listing quickly. Search
engines monitor the time your visitors spend at your site and figure
this into the overall ranking.

Don't
for a minute think that if you know web site design you won't need
graphic design skills. I have never seen an employer who didn't require
Photoshop for a web site design position unless the position is soley
to work on XML, ASP, PHP, REBOL, C++ or some other language for database
driven sites. Learning web design is learning the limits and advantages
of your media, with well thought layout for effective user interface
and navigation. Graphic Design studies why layouts work, what strokes
affect users, how to build a corporate identity, brand recognition,
plus more... AND GRAPHICS!
First
things first, no self respecting web, graphic or logo designer should
(or would) ever be caught without Adobe Photoshop. GET IT! You don't
have to get the latest version from me or Amazon.com, JUST GET IT!
Go to Adobe if you prefer, but
GET IT! This is the single most important decision you will ever make,
nothing else measures up, though Fireworks is starting to look promising
in the future of it's development. What did I say? GET IT!
To
get the most out of Photoshop, add some professional plugins from
www.alienskin.com
These plugins will help you make the most of Photoshop, allowing you
to do cool effects (chrome, glass, metalic surfaces and more), complex
bevels, superior shadowing, make seamless repeating tile background
images, and much more. And Eye Candy 4000 now features an all new
improved interface which makes it even more useable and friendly.
Symbiotic

Since 1997, Symbiotic Design has been producing logos and graphics
for organizations such as the University of Sioux Falls, the American
Association for the History of Medicine, THP, Maria's Violin &
Viola Lessons, New Business Listings, the NCC, Search Engine Optimization
Pros, and others. Experience counts!

This has always been a great web source of education and this site
specifically caters to those who are seeking an education in the Graphic

Balance
Balance
is a graphic design forum on About. It's run by Judy Litt and
she is a very good writer on the subject of balance, always seemingly
taking a different approach but writing effectively so that you understand
and (usually) agree. She hosts a list full of pleasant surprises.
Web
Hosting
WOW!
was that a lot to take in or what? But here comes a little reward,
finding a web host and getting your web site online. If you are using
a pro to do this for you, you have just saved yourself an incredible
amount of work. With technologies evolving daily, it's a wonder we
get a chance to stay up with all that's going on. Any good web designer
has hosting facilities to meet your need, or at the least has partnered
with another professional hosting firm who knows how to take care
of you.
Unfortunately,
this is not always the case. If your professional is merely a designer
who can give you the quality design work you expect at a great price
AND know what he is doing as he also designs for the search engines,
you are set. But don't ask for anymore than he can provide. Find a
truly professional web hosting company to assure that when someone
types in your address the browser isn't timing out half of the time
because you are using a virtual IP on a backwoods connection. Here
is a qualified list of hosting professionals:
Symbiotic
Design Hosting
Our servers blah, blah... I could talk all day about how damn good
we are. But I'd rather show you. If at 28 days of service (a full
four weeks) you are not completely satisfied with our service, I will
refund you every penny (even the "nonrefundable" setup fee)
and close your account with only one question, "What can we do
to improve our service?" And you do not have to answer if you
don't want to. We want to provide you with the best hosting you can
find, and we will. We are connected directly to the fibernodes
of the AT&T, GC, and Qwest highspeed backbones for a truly global
online presence. Advanced Linux Apache servers (if you want poky Windows
systems, see another listing). Free Webmaster Tools Black Label Edition
with every new hosting account (licensed to the web site owner and/or
webmaster, only). Our name is hard to remember, but our service is
unforgettable.

Symbiotic
Design
Who'd
of thunk it, eh? Yes, we are quite capable of web development as well.
We can draw on a large pool of freelance developers from the Symbiotic
Design Team, and they are very good at their specialties. We cover
PHP, ASP, ColdFusion, Perl/CGI, Java (JSP and Servlets), JavaScript,
SSI, Shockwave, Flash. We are looking for more database driven
website projects, as well. We can't stand still, or we might lose
our edge. Get our screened and approved developers working for you!

Web Development Resources
No,
no, no, you aren't done yet. Every web designer needs to know a little
something about the way things work. Web Designers are usually required
to know advanced JavaScript or Flash, at the very least. Knowing ASP,
PHP, Java or ColdFusion will dramatically increase your chances of
success. Even if it's just your web site you are working on, You want
it to be a masterpiece, right?
If
you are going it alone, while you are gearing up your server and getting
things ready, you will want to take full advantage of the spare time
you have to actually reduce your workload and develop a highly addicting
interactive web site that your visitors will enjoy, spread the word,
generate more traffic for you. Remember, you have to use every tool
at your disposal to ensure success.
webmonkey
Webmonkey simplifies everything for you. Except design. These guys
are GREAT developers and wonderful at explaining it, but they only
seem to have a design section out of obligation. Still first on my
list for development though. Their Director tools rock. And this is
one of few web developer sites that is actually designed well.
SitePoint
This is the best developer's resource I've seen for Database driven
web sites, as well as PHP and MySQL fans. There's a whole mess of
help for other schools of folk as well.
webdeveloper.com
Where
Web Developers and Web Designers go to learn. Well, one of many such
sources, of course. But a very good one because of the information.
Though it strikes me as a little hard to navigate for a site that
is teaching designers. But it's more of a developer's resource. They
like things geeky.

I run Symbiotic
Design - a small new media design studio with a large
freelance artist pool in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We hope you will
visit us on the web. We do graphic and logo design in all media, and
we specialize at web design. All work on the Symbiotic Design
web site has been solely handled by me, to date (
8/30/03
). This will change as we grow, but the web site itself is also intended
as an instructional tool for budding artists and designers. We are
known world wide as Identity Architects and Business Image Experts.
I am also attempting
to produce a very professional CD-ROM with my art. This CD-ROM will
specialize in providing graphics that are tailored especially for
use on the web. By mere association, this also makes the art particularly
well suited for computer backgrounds, presentations, software and
video. Most of the page backgrounds are absolutely seamless tiles
and therefore can also be used as textures and bumpmaps in 3D modeling.
Examples of the material on the CD-ROM will be added in our CyberGallery
as we have the opportunity. Please check back for details from time
to time, though we won't be announcing anything until we are finalizing
the dpArtCD for release.
My real love is

With that, I'll
close this little bio, as I get extremely enraged over this topic.
However, please note that this fiasco has only crippled my ability
to manage my free time, that was Maria's job. I have not and will
not jeopardize my commitment to you, our client.
God Bless
