Graphic design is a broad term. For brevity, we won't try to define it. Let's just say that it is the juxtoposition and presentation of elements in any visually communicative media to provide a cohesive interactive compostition. By juxtoposition, I am refering to how elements are arranged. How each element is treated and presented is equally important in defining the final composition. The term elements represents letters, words, sentences, paragraphs, photographs, art, images and marks, or any combination thereof. By marks, we are refering to trademarks, service marks, artist's marks and logos of distinction. Additionally, musical and audio treatments of new media can also be considered design elements.
Yes, even print media should be interactive. That is to say that it should be engaging and invite the reader to pursue a subject further by enticing him or her with the appropriate visual appeal. Certainly we can't click on a subject in a glossy paper based magazine to find more about a subject as we can on the web, but the method of drawing in a reader is without mistake, interactive design.
Designers form visual appeal by thier treatment of a layout. And a good designer considers all of the elements involved. As an example, I will discuss the elements in our version 2.1 design update of our web site that is currently ongoing (this page is currently a good representative of version 2.1).
The logo we chose to start each page often works as a visual maze and provides eye appeal for our viewers while emphasizing our company presence. It is a high quality image file because we create and produce logos for others, and it loads on over 50 pages within the website. This logo blends into our white background and incorporates a high level of white space, which is echoed throughout our company documents, online and off for an artistic theme. A small interactive animated main menu follows the logo providing navigation options and further enhances the white space around the logo while helping to further define our cause. An additional submenu seperates the header from the body and allows easy navigation to different sections of our web site. These tabs also allow us to communicate to the viewer which section he or she is currently in. The fonts on this page and throughout the site have been carefully selected for high readability. The fonts chosen are widely available on almost any platform. The body of text is indented to provide more white space. The very first letter of text is oversized to point out the place to start. The text header describing the page is a normal size bolded Arial font and only our company name is capitalized. The actual body of information is a smaller, allowing more information to be communicated without making the page excessively long. We use the Verdana font which is clearer and much easier to read at this size. Our logo is echoed in a smaller size below with our contact information and FAQ link. Clicking the lower logo takes the user to an alternate style menu. The page ends with our copyright and latest update information. And because we use our home system as our stereo as we surf the web, our business pages deliberately do not include music or audio files so that we do not interfere with any already present audio signal.
The theme of this page is reused effectively throughout our web site, providing consistency and maintaining the branding of our services, though there are slight design deviations in some instances for certain areas. Our pages also print out well. We are using an HTML design base for every page so that we do not alienate any user on any platform who might not be able to view advanced pages. Yet, this design also allows for further improvement and expansion using advanced layout techniques and technologies for DHTML and Flash users in future versions. Every decision has been carefully considered to provide a relaxed, even carefree and lazy overall artistic appeal.
We hope that you feel that you are invited to stick around for all the content. Unlike many 4 or 6 page graphic design sites, we do provide plenty of content in order to keep you coming back, we do update the web site frequently.
Graphic design covers almost anything to do with layout, prepress production, and presentation. Even when a photograph is presented, how it is presented is a vital concern. Layout is everything to making a page interesting.
