The Symbiotic Design CyberGallery presents dpBackgrounds
Information:
dpBackgrounds are quality original backgrounds by dp (Doug Peters) suitable for Desktop, Web, Presentation and Program Application Backgrounds. Alternatively, some can be used as effective 3D Object bumpmaps or textures. Most every background tile is a seamless repetitive tile unless it's very design makes this prohibitive.Note:
All images are original works © copyright by the artist, Doug Peters (dp). These images are downloadable and free for personal use. Commercial use requires the purchase of a special license unless marked as Public Domain. These images are NOT redistributable and Symbiotic Design maintains exclusive redistribution rights to these images unless a specific image is clearly marked as Public Domain, but the artist, dp, hopes for a copy of any media redistributions of his work. Public Domain backgrounds are marked with a white * (asterisk) in the menu as well as stated as such in the image information section (directly next to the image). All images available here and elsewhere on the Symbiotic Design website are also available on the dpArt CD. This represents a small sampling of the background images available on the dpArt CDROM.Instructions
To view a background image:
Click the title of background you are interested in from the list to the right. This area of the page (the main viewing area) will load and display the image you selected, along with some information and details about the image. Click on the actual background tile image, or it's name, to see it tiled as a repetitive page background. This allows you to check the image for seams. Please do not load images from this website server. This would strain our bandwidth and our wallet. Always save the images to your own local hard drive or your remote web server and load them from there so that you can access the image easily and effectively without causing the Symbiotic Design server excess work. We really appreciate this, and we expect that you will be pleased with the performance as well. Any abuse of Symbiotic Design's bandwidth for remotely accessing these images cannot be tolerated and could result in ISP blocking. Please understand that this site is graphic intensive and hosts other websites, so we have to protect our clientele should we one day become a popular gallery. Optionally, you may purchase the dpArt CDROM and load the images from there. Thank you.
To save an image in the gallery:
When you find an image that you would like to save as a background tile:
In Windows right click and then select "Save picture as..." or "Save image as..."
On the Mac hold down the mouse button until you can select "Save picture as..." or "Save image as..."To use an image as a desktop background:
These backgrounds can be used as backgrounds in web pages, videos, program applications, utilities, installers, presentations, or as desktop patterns for free as long as they are not used commercially or redistributed in any form. We do hope that you will want to support our work and grab the entire collection on CDROM, though. The dpArt CD includes more images and provides each image in many different formats for different platforms, applications and uses.Since this website only includes the optimal format to expedite the internet world wide web delivery for each image without sacrificing image quality, each image can be converted to any other format for use as desktop patterns, presentations, video graphic backgrounds, and/or 3D object textures/bumpmaps.
To use an image as a desktop background on a Windows based PC without running Microsoft's resource hog, Active Desktop, or an extra backgounding utility, use any image processing utility to load the image and save it out as a bitmap (*.bmp) file. This will allow you to load the image using your display properties (right click on the desktop, select properties, the background tab should appear right away). Remember to select "Tile" under "Picture Display" after you browse to the converted image bitmap location on your hard drive if you want the image to tile.
To use an image as a desktop background on a Macintosh based PC using Apple's own Desktop Pictures utility, load the selected image into any image processing utility and save the image out as a PICT resource file. Remember to load it as a pattern if you are going to tile the image. With the Mac you can even select another image to center on the screen such as a company logo or cartoon.
To use an image as a Workbench background on an older Amiga based PC, load the selected image into any image processing utility and save the image out as an IFF picture file and load that converted "Interchange File Format" image into the WBPattern utility which is in the Preferences drawer. Note that larger images may use valuable memory on systems without much memory, hence slowing your system down if taxed too much. Older systems without much memory may want to opt for smaller images such as many of the backgrounds marked as "Public Domain" which were originally designed for lower Amiga resolutions.

Images marked clearly as "Public Domain" may be redistributed provided the artist is compensated with a copy of the distribution media (such as CDROM or floppy disk).
