We have experience dealing with merchant account providers, not all of it good. Believe it or not, there are major credit card processing companies on the internet who conduct business fraudulently. For more information, please read our Fraud Alert concerning CreditCardProcessor.com.

Merchant account providers we DO recommend to all:

PayPal: These guys are great! They offer the best rates with no hidden fees and no longer require a user to "sign-in" as a PayPal member in order to do business with you for most purchases (subscription services do require PayPal membership as a matter of security). PayPal is now an eBay company. We have since joined the PayPal Developer Network and fully support PayPal shopping carts and development.
 

American Express: American Express knows and understands the concerns of business online and gives special attention to small business through their "Open" network services. Accept Credit Cards with a Reliable and Trustworthy Payment Processoer - PayQuake! We've been using PayQuake for a few years, now at Domain Hostmaster™ and we have never had any problems. Skipjack Financial Services: For a full service merchant approach, Skipjack is a full fledged payment gateway that supports a wide variety of credit cards and offers a wealth of information online as well as freindly support should you run into a problem. Symbiotic Design is also a developer for the Skipjack Transaction Network. They protect online transactions with their own encryption method. Verisign:
If you want a full service ecommerce web site complete with a shopping cart, although all Symbiotic Design web hosted accounts are ecommerce capable, our top two web site plans (Developer and eCommerce) come packaged complete with an optional realtime shopping cart that works specifically (and only) with Verisign, one of the country's largest leading and trusted merchant account solution providers in the country.

  
Summary:
We do recommend PayPal as they are such a great solution for home based and small to medium sized businesses. Business to business sites might consider American Express. The combination of using PayPal and American Express together can help a small enterprise get started. Another option for a full service merchant account is to use Skipjack which supports all major credit cards and offers a wealth of information on getting your online store working with their gateway. Unfortunately, Skipjack doesn't offer a free shopping cart and does push their own online secure server payment solution, so getting a shopping cart or a programmer is required if you want to run all transactions from your server. Symbiotic Design also provides shopping carts that work exclusively with Verisign in it's top two web hosting packages for ease of storefront setup and management. And Verisign is a leading merchant account provider. Still, there are many options, perhaps too many. We will be adding more reviews as we work with these companies.
